6 ways essential oils can help your hair growth

Your hair can be just as good as your day, believe me. Some patience, some love and essential oils – et voila! You’re breezing through week after week just winning at life without actually constantly worrying about limp hair.

So how are you gonna get there? This handy guide will help you understand why hair fall happens and how your crown can go from sad to Rachel from Friends in no time.

What causes hair fall?

Dull and unhealthy hair, excessive hair fall, inflamed and itchy scalp, and slow hair growth are often a result of multiple factors such as

  • Genetics
  • Stress
  • Poor diet and lack of nutrients
  • Use of harsh hair treatment products
  • Inflammation
  • Hormones
  • Age

Factors like genetics and age cannot be controlled. The other factors can be brought under your control through a good diet, managing stress, right hair care practices, and staying clear of harsh, synthetic chemical-based hair care products. The common solution to all these hair-fall causes is essential oils!

Essential oils and hair

Essential oils have always been important ingredients in skin and scalp care. With their hair follicle-stimulating, scalp-soothing, and hair-loss-reducing properties, essential oils can be a great ingredient in hair growth.

Most essential oils have some form of anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-microbial properties. But specific essential oils are more suited for hair care than others. Without further ado, here are 6 ways essential oils can boost hair growth and restore damaged hair.

1. Essential Oils Stimulate Hair Follicles

There are many treatments that claim to increase follicles. Unfortunately, you cannot increase how many follicles you are born with. But you can stimulate faster hair growth in follicles.

Tunisian Rosemary Oil is one of the best essential oils to promote faster hair growth. Tunisian Rosemary oil is often used in treatments for Alopecia and its ability to stimulate hair growth is comparable to minoxidil 2% (FDA-approved treatment for Alopecia), without the side effects.

Rosemary essential oil stimulates hair growth by dilating capillaries in follicles and improving blood flow to the scalp, which promotes cell growth. Packed with antioxidants, Rosemary oil also slows premature greying and hair thinning.

2. Essential oils reduce scalp inflammation

Scalp and follicle inflammation can cause a weakening of hair roots and increase hair fall. Scalp inflammation also causes dandruff, which can make you feel self-conscious.

If you suffer from dandruff or itchy scalp-related hair fall, we recommend using Ollie’s Peppermint Essential Oil.

Peppermint oil is a common ingredient in many anti-dandruff shampoos. Its main ingredient is menthol, which is a vasodilator. This means it relaxes blood vessels when applied to the scalp and stimulates blood flow to follicles.

Additionally, peppermint essential oil has antimicrobial properties. If you suffer from inflamed follicles because of a yeast or bacterial infection, apply 4 drops of peppermint oil diluted with 1 Tbsp jojoba oil, 3 times a week to clear up the infection and soothe your inflamed scalp.

Alternatively, add 10 drops of peppermint oil to 1 bottle of shampoo and mix thoroughly before use.

3. Essential Oils Improve Scalp and Hair Health

Hair growth can be impeded when your scalp is not healthy. Excessive oil production, dandruff, skin flaking, head lice, and inflamed scalp can cause slow-growing, brittle hair.

Tea Tree Oil is a natural and gentle alternative to restoring scalp health. Mix 8 drops of tea tree oil to your shampoo for a soothing, scalp-restoring treatment. The antioxidants in tea tree oil repair damaged skin.

If you have a little one who picked up lice from school (as kids often do!), dilute 6 drops of tea tree oil + 6 drops of peppermint oil with 3 Tbsp of coconut oil and apply on the scalp every day for 2 weeks.

This method kills lice without using insecticides as in conventional delousing treatments and prevents further infestation. The smell of tea tree oil and peppermint oil is repulsive to most insects.

4. Essential Oils Balance Scalp pH and Stimulate Hair Growth

No matter your hair type or scalp skin type, you can use Lavender Essential Oil to balance scalp pH. It has both anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, so it can calm irritated, itchy, red scalps in no time.

Lavender oil also hair-boosting properties equivalent to Minoxidil, a common ingredient in hair growth treatments.

Additionally, if you experience stress-related hair fall, using lavender essential oil can not only prevent hair fall and boost hair growth but can also reduce your stress. Lavender oil is a great aromatherapy ingredient.

Add 5-6 drops of lavender oil to your shampoo or 7-8 drops to an aroma diffuser, for better sleep and a calm mind. You will notice reduced hair fall in a few weeks as your body begins to destress. An additional bonus? You will start smelling like a meadow of flowers!

5. Essential Oils Make Amazing Hair Masks

We spend hundreds of dollars each year on hair products and treatments only to end up with frazzled, worn-out hair strands. Don’t stress your locks further with any more harsh chemicals.

Instead, restore hair shine, strengthen hair roots, and nourish your scalp deeply with goodness right from mama Earth’s heart — essential oils.

We believe in using only 100% pure essential oils. We don’t add a single drop of synthetic fragrances. This is why you can make your own hair-rejuvenating mask with the assurance that your body is getting the very best that it deserves.

Here’s one of my favourite hair mask recipes that leave me with strong, healthy hair:

Blend all the ingredients together and apply to damp hair and scalp once or twice a week. Leave on for 45-60 minutes and rinse off with cool water.

You will start to see a noticeable difference within a month with your hair becoming softer, shinier, and stronger than before.

6. Essential Oils Can Deeply Protect Hair

If you like to style your hair regularly, you might have noticed dull, brittle hair. The heat and stress of frequent styling can leave your hair depleted and burnt out.

But you don’t have to give up those beachy waves yet! You can restore and protect your hair from heat damage by using essential oils. I make my own hair conditioner which leaves my hair healthy and shiny even after styling.

Ingredients:

1 tbsp fractionated coconut oil (strengthens hair)
1 tbsp jojoba oil (protects scalp)
1 tsp aloe vera (soothes scalp)
5 drops Ollie’s Himalayan Lavender Oil
3 drops Ollie’s Tunisian Rosemary Oil
3 drops Ollie’s Peppermint Oil
5 drops Ollie’s Egyptian Geranium Oil
½ cup water

Hair care does not require expensive ingredients

All those giant billboard ads telling you to use multiple products on your hair can be confusing. Especially if many of them don’t always work. I prefer to keep my hair healthy without adding any artificial chemicals or fragrances. And I’m sure you do too.

For a change, give your hair some room to grow by switching to essential oils. They are safe, natural, and packed with hair-restoring properties such as antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties.

Most of the common hair ailments such as dandruff, hair fall, premature greying, and itchy scalp can easily be solved with essential oils — and have you smelling great too!
